Now India should stake claim to host Olympics: IOA chief PT Usha

Buoyed by the record medal win at the Hangzhou Asian Games, Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha on Sunday supported the government’s proposal to host the 2036 Olympics. India won 107 medals, including 28 gold, in the Asian Games that ended on Sunday. Last time India had won 70 medals.

Usha told PTI, “After the record-breaking performance in the Hangzhou Asian Games, if our country’s players, coaches and national federation work hard, we can win double digit medals in the Paris Olympics.” It is making every possible effort for the betterment of Indian sports and players. Our Prime Minister takes a lot of interest in the sports of the country.

Usha said that now India should claim to host the Olympics. He said, “We should stake claim to host the 2023 Olympics. I am sure India will win more medals in Paris Olympics than Tokyo. After winning the medal, we can claim to host the Olympics.

The government is likely to express interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics during the International Olympic Committee session to be held in Mumbai from October 15 to 17. After the recent reforms of the IOC, now the countries wishing to host the Olympics will submit their proposals and the IOC will present its recommendations to the Future Host Commission Executive Board. The Executive Board will then decide whether the proposal will be put to a vote at the IOC session.

Usha said that she is not surprised by India winning more than a hundred medals in the Asiad. She said, “I have been a sportsperson myself and I knew from the beginning that India would win more than 100 medals in Hangzhou. I am not at all surprised by this.” Usha said, ”Everyone has worked very hard for this. Be it players, coaches, support staff or officials. The government cooperated fully. Being a track and field athlete, I am happy that we won 29 medals in this sport.
