Lausanne: Due to infighting between the Pakistan Hockey Federation and the country’s sports board, the International Hockey Federation snatched the hosting of the men’s hockey Olympic qualifier from Pakistan and gave it to Oman. The International Hockey Federation announced that the tournament will be held in Muscat between January 15 and 21 next year. The three other FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers will be held in China (Women’s Qualifier 15 to 24 January 2024) and Spain (Women’s and Men’s 13 to 21 January 2024).
FIH said in a statement, “In view of the latest situation in the Pakistan Hockey Federation administration, FIH had decided to withdraw the hosting of Puru Olympic Hockey Qualifier from Pakistan. Now this tournament will be played in Oman.” Women’s and six men’s teams will qualify for the Paris Olympics.
The teams of Australia and Netherlands have already secured a place in the Paris Olympics by winning the Oceania Cup and Euro Hockey Championship. The Asian Games, Pan American Games and the African Hockey Road to Paris tournament being played in China will determine the remaining automatically qualifying teams. The hockey competition at the Paris Olympics will run from 27 July to 9 August.
