Christchurch: Kane Williamson on Wednesday rejected former batsman Ross Taylor’s suggestion that top New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner was ‘forced to retire’ before the start of the two-Test series against Australia at home. .
Wagner made an emotional announcement of his international retirement on the eve of the first Test in Wellington after the selectors told him he would not be included in the playing eleven during the Test series.
Thirty-seven-year-old Wagner, however, entered the field as a substitute fielder in the first Test and on some occasions even went to the field carrying a drink. New Zealand lost this match by 172 runs.
Addressing reporters along with current captain Tim Southee, Williamson said he had not seen Taylor’s comments. Both Southee and Williamson will play their 100th Test.
‘NZ Herald’ quoted Williamson as saying, “I don’t think anyone is forced to retire. (Wagner) had a great week last week reflecting on an incredible career and we had some amazing moments in the dressing room. Obviously it wasn’t perfect, the performance on the field would have helped. But it was more than that and he has done incredible things for this team and we have seen how much skill he has and how much he can do. “There are statistics that everyone looks at.”
“But you know he gave his heart and soul to the team and led it in a big way for such a long time,” Williamson said. It’s been incredible and that’s why it was a very special week. I think he really had a wonderful time.” Taylor suggested in a podcast on ‘ESPNcricinfo’ that it appears Wagner has been forced into retirement.
“I think it all makes sense a little bit now,” Taylor said. I think it’s a forced retirement. If you listened to Wagner’s press conference he was retiring but it was after this last Test match (against Australia). So he made himself available.”
Meanwhile, Williamson refused to be part of such discussions in the New Zealand camp. Williamson said, “I am not involved in those discussions, but as far as I know he has now retired.”
