Pistorius has served almost nine years of a 13 years and five months sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He was approved for parole in November. In South Africa, people who commit serious crimes are eligible for parole after serving at least half of their sentence. The Department of Corrections announced Pistorius’ release saying they were “able to confirm that Oscar Pistorius is on parole effective January 5, 2024.” “He was placed in the community corrections system and is now home.”
Pistorius was initially expected to be staying at his uncle’s house in Waterkloof, Pretoria, and a police van was seen parked outside that house.
