After the partnership of 120 runs in 117 balls for the fourth wicket of Mohammad Rizwan (68 runs in 75 balls) and Saud Shakeel (68 runs in 52 balls), the good performance of the bowlers led by Haris Rauf (3 wickets in 43 runs) Pakistan defeated Netherlands by 81 runs in its opening match of the ODI World Cup on Friday.
Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede did wonders with both ball (four wickets for 62 runs) and bat (67 runs in 68 balls). But in batting, apart from Vikramjit Singh (52 runs in 67 balls), he did not get support from any other player of the team.
De Leede took four wickets with his medium pace bowling and Pakistan was all out for 286 runs in 49 overs. While chasing the target, De Leede and Vikramjit Singh kept the hopes of Netherlands alive by making a partnership of 70 runs for the third wicket. But after the break of this partnership, the innings fell apart and the entire team was out for 205 runs in 41 overs.
After the break of this partnership, Rauf dismissed Anil Teja (five) and Scott Edwards (zero) in the 27th over of the match. Shaheen Shah Afridi trapped Saqib Zulfikar LBW while left arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz ended Netherlands’ hopes by bowling out Daliday.
Vice-captain Shadab Khan, who was surrounded by criticism, also bowled well. Vikramjeet batted effectively against Shaheen in the powerplay and hit three fours. De Leede sent the ball taking the spin of Nawaz to the spectators. Pakistan team had lost the wickets of both the opening batsmen and captain Babar Azam in the opening over.
While De Leede took wickets in the middle overs, off-spinners Aryan Dutt (one wicket for 48 runs) and Colin Ackerman (two wickets for 39 runs) took advantage of the spin-friendly pitch in Hyderabad. The Netherlands team is participating in the World Cup after 12 years. The team used eight bowlers against Pakistan.
Dutt opened the bowling with Logan van Beek and Pakistan lost the wickets of Fakhar Zaman (12), Babar (five) and Imam ul Haq (15) by the 10th over. Van Beek walked Fakhar while Ackerman walked Babar. Paul van Meekeran dismissed Imam on his first ball.
Rizwan and Saud made Pakistan’s comeback in the match but Dutt gave a big blow to Pakistan by dismissing Saud who was batting fast. Saud hit nine fours and one six in his innings. De Leede then bowled Rizwan. Nawaz (39) and Shadab (39) made a partnership of 64 runs for the seventh wicket and took the team beyond 250 runs.
Pakistan team was moving towards 300 runs but De Leede stopped the run pace by dismissing Shadab and Hasan Ali (0) on consecutive balls. Pakistan team could not play full 50 overs of its quota.
