Mullanpur. Rishabh Pant was the highlight of the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium. The allure of Pant’s much-awaited return to cricket after recovering from injuries sustained in a fatal car accident in December 2022 was such that fans flocked to Mullanpur in large numbers from Delhi and Haryana, apart from places around Punjab, Himachal Pradesh.
This wicketkeeper batsman was making a comeback after 455 days. Crowds of fans were present in the stadium waiting to see a glimpse of Pant on the field. When Pant came to the field for the toss, the fans welcomed him enthusiastically. Fans, seen wearing jerseys with numbers ranging from 17 to 777, struggled a lot to reach the stadium. These fans reached the stadium through the unpaved roads of the villages in the afternoon heat to support their star player.
After this, when he came out to bat, he looked confident. As Pant started walking towards the pitch, he looked towards the sky and the sun and started walking to join Shai Hope at the crease.
The entire stadium echoed with thunderous applause. He faced the first ball of his comeback against left arm spinner Harpreet Brar. Pant tried to cut while sitting on the ball, however there was no proper connection between the ball and the bat.
On his second ball, Pant played a shot towards midwicket for a single. Making a comeback after a long time, when Pant was denied two runs twice in his first six balls, it was understood that caution was needed this time.
Pant hit two excellent boundaries but fell victim to Harshal Patel on the 13th ball of his innings. He faced 13 balls and scored 18 runs with the help of two fours. Angered at missing the opportunity to do something special on his return, Pant returned to the dressing room by hitting his bat on his pads. Later in the visuals, head coach Ricky Ponting was seen explaining to Pant.
