New Delhi, April 12 (HS). Boxing legend and 2012 Olympic Games bronze medalist MC Mary Kom has resigned as chef-de-mission of the Indian contingent for the Paris Olympic Games, citing personal reasons.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha announced that Mary Kom had asked to be relieved of her post in a letter addressed to her.
In her letter to the IOA President, Mary Kom said she is grateful to the Indian Olympic Association for reposing confidence in her to serve as the Chef de Mission at Paris 2024.
She wrote, “I consider it an honor to serve my country in every possible way and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to take up this prestigious responsibility and due to personal reasons “I would like to resign. It’s embarrassing to back out of a commitment I rarely make, but I have no option.”
The IOA chief said in a statement, “We are saddened that Olympic medalist boxer and IOA Athletes Commission Chairperson Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons. We respect her decision and her privacy. Will consult and announce Mary’s replacement soon.”
She said, “I completely understand his request and respect his decision. I have also told him that he will always have my and the IOA’s support. I also request everyone to respect his privacy.” “
The 41-year-old boxer has represented the country in two editions of the Olympic Games (2016 Rio and 2020), winning bronze at the 2012 Games in London but missing out on a medal in Tokyo. The Paris Olympics is to be held in the capital of France from 26 July to 11 August.
