Teenage archer Preneet Kaur notched up the biggest win of her career by outclassing top Indian compound archer Jyoti Surekha Vennam to the individual title at the Asian Championships here on Thursday. The compound archers once again prevailed over their recurve team. India won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Of these seven medals, only one bronze came in the recurve category (women’s team). The title match of the compound women’s category was between two archers from India. Praneeth was trailing by two points in the middle of the match but this 18 year old player made a brilliant comeback and made the score 145-145. Jyoti, who recently won a hat-trick of gold medals in the Asian Games, could not perform at her best in the tie-breaker.
She lost to Preneet 8-9 in the shoot-off. The mixed compound pair of Aditi Swami and Priyansh won India’s second gold medal of the day. The pair defeated Thailand 156–151 in a one-sided final. The women’s team of Jyoti, Preneet and Aditi managed to repeat their Asian Games success with a gold medal by defeating Chinese Taipei 234-233 in the compound final. India won its third bronze medal in the men’s individual compound category. Abhishek Verma defeated Jo Jaehoon of South Korea 147-146. The poor performance of the recurve archers continued in this competition as well where no archer could advance beyond the quarter finals.
Dheeraj Bommadevara lost 3-7 to Tang Chih-chun while his experienced army colleague Tarundeep Rai went down 0-6 (27-29, 28-29 29-30) to South Korea’s Kim Jae Deok. In the women’s category, Indian archers failed to cross the pre-quarterfinal hurdle. Bhajan Kaur lost to world number one Lim Sihyeon of South Korea 0-6 (28-29, 26-30, 26-29), while Tisha Punia could only manage one point against China’s Hai Liang. She lost to the Chinese player 1-7 (24-29, 27-27, 28-29, 27-28).
