New Delhi. Punjab Kings (PBKS) made a big mistake by buying the ‘wrong player’ during the Indian Premier League 2024 auction. By the time he realized the mistake the bidding had been completed and the auctioneer refused to reverse the bid.
The focal point of the chaos was uncapped Indian player Shashank Singh, who was mistakenly bought by PBKS at the base price of Rs 20 lakh after a mix-up in the player’s name during the 2024 IPL auction in Dubai on Tuesday.
During the quick round, auctioneer Mallika Sagar announced the name of 32-year-old Shashank, who represents Chhattisgarh in domestic cricket.
The uncapped batting all-rounder, who remained unsold in last year’s auction after he was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad to find a team for the 2024 IPL, Punjab Kings emerged as the only bidder for the uncapped all-rounder.
When Shashank’s name cropped up, PBKS co-owner Zinta took up the matter after a brief discussion with the rest of her team. Auctioneer Mallika Sagar followed the routine procedure and sealed the sale to Shashank’s franchise with her hammer.
When auctioneer Mallika moved on to the next set of players, the first name of which was that of Tanay Thiagarajan, PBKS realized their mistake and owners Ness Wadia and Zinta informed them that they had mistaken Shashank for another player.
“Oh! You don’t want the player?” Mallika asked. “We are talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has come down. Players number 236 and 237 both went to you, I think.”
Wadia and Zinta were eager to re-engage him in the auction, yet auction rules prevent such action once the hammer confirms a purchase, thereby solidifying the transaction.
