Police detained protesting wrestlers for violating law and order

It seems that the police will no longer allow the wrestlers to come back to the picket site, but no official statement has been issued in this context. The police had warned the wrestlers not to go towards Parliament but they went ahead after which the clash broke out. Top wrestlers had resumed their agitation on April 23 demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Brij Bhushan has been accused of alleged sexual harassment of several female wrestlers, including a minor.
Amid the chaos at Jantar Mantar, wrestlers and police officers pushed each other and Vinesh Phogat, her sister Sangeeta Phogat and Sakshi tried to break through the barricade. Vinesh put up a stiff resistance when he tried to take him into custody and Sangeeta lay down on the road hugging him. Police officers dragged him along with several other wrestlers and their supporters to buses. Dipendra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, said, “They have been detained for violating law and order. We will take legal action after investigation.
“We need to assess the entire situation. As you have seen the barricades have been broken and they have moved ahead despite requests and warnings, so we have removed them from here. “The important thing is that peace will be maintained in all situations. We will take professional steps to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Earlier, Pathak had urged wrestlers not to indulge in anti-national activities on the ‘historic day’ of the inauguration of the new Parliament building.
He said, “Today is the inauguration of our new parliament. It is an important day and a proud moment for our country. That’s why any kind of movement or march is anti-national on this day. Either way, Delhi Police will not make any mistake. We respect and love our players but cannot allow any untoward incident.” The protesting wrestlers and their supporters were taken to different places in Delhi. Bajrang has been kept in custody at the police station near Mayur Vihar while Sakshi is at Burari.
Vinesh and Sangeeta were taken to Kalkaji. The Delhi Police had tightened security at Jantar Mantar after wrestlers called for a ‘Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat’ in front of the new Parliament building on Sunday. The new building of Parliament House was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday morning. Vinesh resisted the most and later told the bus that she was being punished for seeking justice. He said, “The accused is roaming free, he is being given shelter by the government and we players who have won medals for the country are now being put in jail for demanding justice for the daughters of the country.” “Welcome to the new country.”
Bajrang believes that a grave injustice has been done to him for demanding justice. “The accused has so much audacity that he is talking about changing the POCSO Act and you are not doing anything against him and here are sportspersons who are demanding justice with folded hands and you are mistreating them,” he said. Bajrang said, “More than 2000 of our supporters were detained. Dictatorship is going on everywhere.” He later tweeted, “Does any government treat the country’s champions like this?
What crime have we committed?” Sakshi also took to Twitter to vent her anger against the government and the Delhi Police. The Olympic medalist wrote, “This is how our champions are being treated. The world is watching us. Sexual abuser Brij Bhushan is sitting in the Parliament today and we are being dragged on the road. Sad day for Indian sports. Was it a crime to win a medal for the country? If yes, then hang us.
Ironically, both Bajrang and Vinesh were detained just meters away from Brij Bhushan’s official residence at 21, Ashoka Road. Thousands of policemen were deployed in the Lutyens’ Delhi area and barricades were put up at many places. The wrestlers, who were protesting sitting about two kilometers away from the Parliament House, had said that they would hold their ‘Mahapanchayat’ near the new Parliament House at any cost.
The agitating wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang, Sakshi and Asian Games gold-winner Vinesh, are demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan, whom they have accused of sexually harassing several women wrestlers. The wrestlers had said that the use of force by the police would not stop them from holding a peaceful march and mahapanchayat. In a video shared by the wrestlers, Sakshi’s husband Satyavrat Kadian and Jitendra Kinha along with several others could be seen raising slogans of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ as the police were taking them away in a vehicle.
