‘Preliminary probe needed’, Delhi Police tells SC before registering FIR against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh

Wrestler Protest: On a petition seeking registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Supreme Court a day after the notice was issued by the Delhi Police Delhi Police said that a preliminary inquiry is needed before registering an FIR on the allegations of sexual harassment leveled by seven female wrestlers. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, told a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha that ‘if the apex court feels that an FIR has to be lodged directly, it can be done’.

Need for preliminary investigation before FIR

Tushar Mehta said, ‘We feel prima facie that there was a need to conduct a preliminary inquiry before registering the FIR.’ He said that do not let such an impression be created that the FIR was not registered despite the court’s order. Let us tell you that a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha had on Tuesday sought response from the Delhi Police and the Delhi government on the demand of the wrestlers to register an FIR on the serious allegations leveled by the players. The Supreme Court will hear on April 28 the petition filed by the wrestlers regarding the registration of an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh for alleged sexual harassment.

While filing arguments, senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that seven wrestlers, including a minor wrestler, have made allegations of sexual exploitation, but despite the law being very clear on this aspect, no FIR has been registered so far. He said that these women are wrestlers. There are seven including a minor. There is a committee report which has not been made public and no FIR has been registered.

Let us inform that top Indian wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia resumed their sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday (April 21) after registering a complaint at the Connaught Place police station. In which it has been said that seven female wrestlers including a minor were sexually abused by Brij Bhushan Singh. At the same time, the wrestlers had threatened on Monday that they would approach the Supreme Court if an FIR was not lodged against the WFI president.
