Protesting wrestlers detained by police, medal winners’ tents uprooted at Jantar Mantar

Agitating wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, Sakshi and Asian Games gold-winner Vinesh, are demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan, whom they have accused of sexually harassing several women wrestlers.
New Delhi. Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia were taken into custody by the Delhi Police on Sunday for violating law and order after they tried to break through the security cordon and proceed towards the new Parliament House for a women ‘mahapanchayat’ that led to protests at Jantar Mantar. There may be an end to the wrestlers’ protests. The wrestlers were forcibly made to sit in buses and sent to an unknown destination.
The police then removed the cots, mattresses, coolers, fans and the tarpaulin roof along with other belongings of the wrestlers. Top wrestlers had resumed their agitation on April 23 demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Amid chaos at Jantar Mantar, wrestlers and police officers pushed each other and Vinesh Phogat and her sister Sangeeta Phogat tried to break the barricade. Vinesh put up a stiff resistance when he tried to take him into custody and Sangeeta lay down on the road hugging him.
Police officers dragged him along with several other wrestlers and their supporters to buses. Dipendra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, said, “They have been detained for violating law and order. We will take legal action after investigation.” The Delhi Police had tightened security at Jantar Mantar after the wrestlers called for ‘Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat’ in front of the new Parliament House on Sunday. The new building of Parliament House was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday morning. Thousands of policemen were deployed in the Lutyens’ Delhi area and several barricades were set up. The wrestlers, who were protesting sitting about two kilometers away from the Parliament House, had said that they would hold their ‘Mahapanchayat’ near the new Parliament House at any cost.
The police, however, said that no protestors would be allowed to move towards the new building as permission has not been granted for the same and the wrestlers should not indulge in any ‘anti-national activities’. Agitating wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, Sakshi and Asian Games gold-winner Vinesh, are demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan, whom they have accused of sexually harassing several women wrestlers.
The wrestlers had said that the use of force by the police would not stop them from holding a peaceful march and mahapanchayat. As per the ‘live location’ shared by a supporter of one of the wrestlers, the moving bus was taking them towards the Tikri border. In another video shared by the wrestlers, Sakshi’s husband Satyavrat Kadian and Jitendra Kinha along with several others could be seen raising slogans of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ as the police were taking them away in a vehicle.
