PU won University Games for the second time

Noida (Best Hindu News): Panjab University (PU) once again crowned champions of Khelo India University Games after a gap of one edition. Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) finished second despite a clean sweep in fencing on Saturday, the last day of the University Games 2022.

PU finished the Games with a total of 69 medals including 26 gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze, while GNDU finished second for the first time by earning 68 medals including 24 gold, 27 silver and 17 bronze. The defending champions Jain University finished third with 16 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals.

Karnataka’s Jain University, however, has the distinction of bringing forward the most successful male and female athletes of the Khelo India University Games. Swimmer Shiv Sridhar won a total of 11 medals including eight gold in the men’s section, while his fellow swimmer Shrungi Bandekar won five gold and four silver medals in the women’s section.

National Games champion Yash Ghanghas was the center of attraction on the final day, winning the gold for Chaudhary Bansi Lal University (CBLU) in the men’s 100+ kg category in Judo.

The other four golds on the final day went to Mumbai University (Judo Women’s 78+ kg), Savitribai Phule Pune University (Men’s Group Traditional Yogasana), Chandigarh University (Weightlifting) and Maharishi Dayanand University (Weightlifting).

In the end, 131 of the 203 participating universities won medals at the Games. During this, at least 11 new sports records were also made in 12 days of the competition. These games were held at nine places in Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Gautam Budh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. The shooting competition was held in Delhi. Water sports also made their debut at the University Games this year with rowing competitions being held in Gorakhpur.
