Mohali (Uttam Hindu News): Punjab Kings on Saturday defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in a rain-curtailed match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) thanks to the lethal bowling of Arshdeep Singh (19/3) after the explosive half-century of Bhanuka Rajapaksa (32 balls, 50 runs). Defeated by seven runs and made a winning start to the tournament.
Batting first, Punjab scored 191 runs in 20 overs. To win the rain-affected match, KKR had to score 154 runs in 16 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method, but the team could only reach the score of 146/7.
Rajapaksa laid the foundation for Punjab’s victory, scoring 50 off 32 balls with five fours and two sixes, while captain Shikhar Dhawan scored 40 off 29 balls with six fours.
Chasing the target for KKR, Andre Russell was leading the team to victory, but Sam Karan gave a jolt to KKR’s hopes by dismissing him in the 15th over. Russell scored 35 runs off 19 balls with three fours and two sixes and after his wicket fell, KKR fell seven runs short of the expected score.
