New Delhi, 20 April (Hindustan). World number nine HS Prannoy and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will lead the Indian challenge at the 2023 Sudirman Cup to be held in Suzhou, China from May 14 to 21. The senior national selection committee on Tuesday picked a “balanced” team with the aim of winning a maiden medal at the mixed team championships.
The Indian men created history by winning the prestigious Thomas Cup last year and have raised their medal hopes at the Sudirman Cup after winning a bronze at the Asian Mixed Team Championships earlier this year.
Badminton Association of India secretary Sanjay Mishra said, “The Sudirman Cup is a prestigious tournament and the selectors have picked the best team after studying domestic and international results. We are confident that this team will challenge for medals this year.”
India have been clubbed with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Australia in Group C and their first task will be to make it to the knock-out stage from a possible trick group. The men’s doubles team will be strengthened by the return of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who was ruled out of the Asian mixed team event due to injury, while experienced Ashwini Ponnappa and new partner Tanisha Castro will provide back-up to All England semi-finalists Gayatri Gopichand and Trisha Jolly. ,
Kidambi Srikanth and senior national women’s singles champion Anupama Upadhyay will be the other singles players in the team.

Men’s singles: HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth (reserve: Lakshya Sen).
Women’s singles: PV Sindhu, Anupama Upadhyay (reserve: Aakarshi Kashyap).
Men’s doubles: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, MR Arjun/Dhruv Kapila.
Women’s doubles: Gayatri Gopichand/Treessa Jolly, Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto.
