Madrid: India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu went down in straight games to Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the final of the Madrid Spain Masters Super 300 badminton tournament. After being out for five months due to injury, his comeback was nothing special. Sindhu, who crashed out of the top 10 last Tuesday after failing to get past the opening round, looked out of touch at any point in the final as she lost 8-21 8-21 to world No. 12 Tunjung. Sindhu had a 7-0 head-to-head record against the 23-year-old from Indonesia before the final but she failed to dominate the match thus shattering her dream of winning her first title in eight months. Sindhu may have lost in the final but making it to the title clash after a long time will give her a lot of confidence going into the upcoming tournament of the year. The qualification tournaments for the Paris Olympics are also starting from next month. Former world champion Sindhu won her last title at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022 while her last World Tour title was at the Singapore Open in July last year.

Sindhu’s coach is currently Vidhi Chowdhary after Korea’s Park Tae Sung pulled out. He had performed well in this tournament till the final and did not lose a single game in between. However, one of them did not work in the title match. Tunjung targeted Sindhu’s forehand and took a 5-1 lead early in the first game. Sindhu tried to make a comeback and cut Tunjung’s lead to 5-7.

The Indonesian players, however, were leading by five points at the interval. Sindhu made a lot of unforced errors after this, taking advantage of which Tunjung grabbed 12 game points and won the first game on the first game point itself. Tunjung’s strokeplay was excellent, Sindhu had no answer.

The Indonesian took an early 6-1 lead in the second game and continued to dominate the match thereafter. She was leading 11-3 at the interval. Tunjung continued to play well after that to collect 12 championship points. Sindhu again made a mistake at the net and thus Tunjung clinched the title.
