Madrid: Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has advanced to the women’s singles semi-finals of the Madrid Spain Masters badminton tournament. At the same time, India’s Kidambi Srikanth has been out of the tournament after losing. Sindhu made it to the semi-finals for the first time in 2023 by defeating world number 19 Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-14 21-17. Srikanth lost 18-21 15-21 to top seed Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in the men’s singles quarterfinals. Second seed Sindhu struggled to find her rhythm as she made her comeback after a long injury lay-off. The 27-year-old has dropped out of the top 10 in the world rankings and was earlier unable to cross the second round hurdle in the last few tournaments in 2023.

Sindhu was trailing for most of the second game but came back from 6-12 down to win in straight games. Sindhu, the only Indian left in the Super 300 tournament, will take on unseeded Yeo Jia Min of Singapore for a place in the final.

Earlier, former world number one and fifth seed Srikanth put up a tough fight but a lack of consistency saw him suffer his third defeat against the Japanese.
