Captain Alyssa Healy struck an unbeaten 96 after brilliant bowling by experienced spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma as UP Warriors thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 10 wickets with 42 balls to spare in the WPL on Friday. .
This is RCB’s fourth consecutive defeat due to which its chances of progressing have suffered a setback. Warriors registered their second win in three matches. Left-arm spinner Ecclestone took four for 13 and off-spinner Deepti Sharma took three for 26 as RCB were bowled out for 138 in 19.3 overs.
From his side, Ellis Parry scored 52 runs in 39 balls which included six fours and a six. Apart from him, opener Sophie Devine contributed 36 runs off 24 balls. Healy scored an unbeaten 96 off 47 balls with the help of 18 fours and a six. Devika Vaidya (36 not out off 31 balls, five fours) played the role of her colleague very well.
With this partnership, the Warriors made the match completely one-sided by scoring 139 runs without any loss in just 13 overs. Healy adopted an aggressive attitude from the beginning and hit a series of fours. In the last over of the power play, he hit Shreyanka Patil for three consecutive fours, which helped Warriors to score 55 runs without loss in the first six overs.
Healy completed his half-century off 29 balls and then hit four consecutive fours in one over of Renuka Singh. After this, he also hit the first six of the innings on Erin Burns. He hit a four on Patil to bring his score to 95 and the team’s score equal to RCB. He needed a six to complete the century but he took one run to take the team to the target.
Earlier, RCB captain Smriti Mandhana, who came out to bat after winning the toss, scored only four runs and was caught in the cover off Rajeshwari Gaikwad. At the other end, however, Devine adopted an aggressive approach from the start.
The New Zealand batsman began with a four and a six in Grace Harris’ first over but when she was going strong with Parry after Mandhana’s dismissal, Ecclestone was bowled in an attempt to cut the ball. He hit five fours and a six in his innings.
Parry also showed his intentions in the beginning by hitting two fours on Anjali Sarvani and six on Gaikwad. With this, RCB was able to score 54 runs in the power play. Parry completed her half-century off 35 balls but meanwhile Kanika Ahuja (eight) and Heather Knight (one) could not support her.
