New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Rishabh Pant is ready to return for Delhi Capitals as captain in IPL 2024. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the franchise is hopeful that Pant, who will miss the 2023 season after suffering an injury in a car accident in December 2022, will be fully fit by the end of February. It has not been confirmed whether he will return as a wicketkeeper batsman or as a specialist batsman but the franchise is happy with the role of captain and batsman.
The first hints of Pant’s IPL comeback came in November, when he took part in the Delhi Capitals camp in Kolkata. Senior franchise support staff Sourav Ganguly (Director of Cricket), Ricky Ponting (Head Coach) and Praveen Amre (Assistant Coach) were also present in the camp.
Pant had discussed the retention and release of players as the auction is to be held in Dubai on December 19. Pant suffered serious injuries to his right knee due to a car accident and he stayed away from cricket completely in 2023. After this, Pant underwent surgery and did rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In the last months he posted several videos in which he said that the recovery is going according to plan. He has started batting but it has not been confirmed whether he will also keep.
There has been no official update on Pant from BCCI since July. BCCI had then said that he is improving a lot in rehab and is doing both batting and keeping in the nets.” If Pant is cleared by the NCA by February next year, as the franchise hopes, the IPL will be the first tournament he will play in after the Bangladesh tour in late 2022.
Last season, in Pant’s absence, Delhi had appointed David Warner as the interim captain. They finished second from bottom with five wins and nine losses in 14 matches.
