New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new captain of the team in place of Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Before tomorrow’s opening match of IPL, CSK has given the responsibility of captaining the team to Ruturaj. The Indian team won the gold medal in the Asian Games under the captaincy of Rituraj.

Earlier, Dhoni had also left the captaincy of CSK in IPL 2022 and then Ravindra Jadeja was made the captain. However, the team’s performance was not good at that time and Dhoni was made the captain of the team in the middle of the season.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK has won the IPL title five times in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. CSK is the defending champion and the challenge will be to retain the team title this season with Ruturaj as the new captain.

Dhoni has captained CSK in 235 out of 249 matches so far. Apart from five IPL titles, Dhoni has also helped CSK win two Champions League T20 titles. Dhoni captained a total of 226 matches in IPL. In which he also captained Rising Pune Super Giants for one season. Dhoni has captained CSK in a total of 212 matches in the IPL, out of which the team won 128 and lost 82. Two matches remained inconclusive.
