Rohit Sharma ends drought of centuries, hits ninth century against Australia

Nagpur | Indian captain Rohit Sharma ended a drought of more than two years by scoring his ninth Test century against Australia here on Friday. Rohit had failed to reach the three-figure mark in Tests since he scored his eighth century against England at The Oval in September 2021.

On Friday, on the second day of the first Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at the VCA Stadium, Rohit hit a brilliant century in 171 balls, hitting 14 fours and two sixes.

Rohit, born in Bansod near Nagpur, made an aggressive start on Thursday morning and reached his maiden half-century in 66 balls. The rest of his fifty came after playing 105 balls.

Earlier, he had scored his first ODI century in almost three years against New Zealand in Indore in January.

But this Test century has come at a much better time for the India skipper, as it has come in difficult conditions on a pitch on which the ball is turning and staying low.

Rohit scored his first century in Test cricket nine years ago in November 2013 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, playing a brilliant inning of 177 runs.

He scored his maiden double century against South Africa in October 2019 with a brilliant 212 at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.
