Centurion: South Africa defeated the West Indies by 87 runs in the first Test, first with Aiden Markram’s excellent batting and then Kagiso Rabada’s deadly bowling. Rabada took a total of eight wickets for his team including both the innings. In the fourth innings, the West Indies team got a target of 247 runs to win, in response to which they were reduced to 159 runs. Jermaine Blackwood played an inning of 79 runs in the batting for the West Indies but he could not work for the team.

In the match, there was unexpected bounce on the fast bowler-friendly Centurion pitch. 16 wickets fell on the third day and 11 wickets fell in the final session on the second day. For the West Indies, Alzarri Joseph took five wickets in the first innings and Kemar Roach took five wickets in the second innings, while Anrich Norkia did the same in the first innings and Rabada in the second innings.

South Africa made 342 in the first innings and took a 130-run lead by bowling out the West Indies for 212 in the first innings. South Africa’s batsmen struggled in the second innings, having started the day at 49 for four but were bundled out for 116 in just 28 overs. This is also his lowest Test score at Centurion. Roach took five wickets for 47 runs. The visiting team had a chance to win but West Indies lost five wickets for 33 runs in 14.2 overs and the team was reduced to 159 runs.

Aiden Markram scored a century

In batting for South Africa, opener Aiden Markram played an excellent century in the first innings. Markram scored 115 runs in 174 balls which included 18 fours. Not only in the first innings, Markram was the highest scorer in the second innings as well and he made an excellent contribution of 47 runs. Markram was also adjudged man of the match for his brilliant innings.

Dean Elgar also scored 71 runs for Markram in the first innings for South Africa, thanks to which the hosts scored 342 runs in the first innings.
