The 28-year-old Sable, a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, clocked 8:17.18, almost six seconds faster than her national record of 8:11.20. Sable had finished fifth in the same event last year with a timing of 8:12.48.
18 runners took part in this event but only 14 runners could finish the race. World and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of the host country clocked 7:56.68 s.Gatenet Wale of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Abraham Kibiwot finished second and third respectively with personal best times of 8:05.15 and 8:05.51.
Meanwhile, India’s 18-year-old Selva Prabhu Thirumaran improved his junior national record to win the gold medal in the men’s triple jump event at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Venizelia Chania, Greece, with a jump of 16.78m. In 2010, he made a national record by jumping 16.58 meters in Havana, Cuba. He had won a silver medal in the Under-20 World Athletics Championships last year. National record holder Jeswin Aldrin finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 7.66m in the same event held in Greece on Sunday. His national record is 8.42 metres.
