New Delhi: Former Indian legend cricketer Sachin Tendulkar remembered the 2011 ODI World Cup win on the 13th anniversary. April 2 is a very important day for Indian cricket, as the Men in Blue won their second ODI World Cup title, ending a wait of 28 years since their first win in 1983.

On this day in 2011, India won the showpiece event in front of the home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, thanks to two brilliant innings from Gautam Gambhir and then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Sharing a picture of the 2011 World Cup trophy moment, Sachin wrote on his social media, “13 years ago, my childhood dream turned into reality. I will always be grateful for the memories, the team and the incredible support of over a billion people.”

Dhoni, along with Gambhir, helped India achieve the target of 274/6 set by Sri Lanka. Later, despite Gambhir being out for 97 runs, India came close to victory, with Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh leading the team to victory. Dhoni’s brilliant six gave India victory with 10 balls remaining.

Sachin, who was part of the Indian team in the ODI World Cup since 1992, had to wait until 2011 to get his hands on the coveted trophy after missing out on five previous occasions.

Former India spin master Harbhajan Singh celebrated India’s 2011 World Cup success, saying, “2-4-2011 memorable day… World Cup winners #grateful.”

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also shared a post on Twitter to mark the 13th anniversary of India’s 2011 World Cup win, “#OnThisDay in 2011, our men created history by winning the ICC Cricket World Cup for the second time!”

“Under the leadership of the great @MSDhoni, with brilliant innings from @GautamGambhir, quality batting from @Sachin_RT, heroic all-round performances from @YuvStrong12 and the entire team played exceptional cricket throughout the tournament!

He wrote, “13 years ago on this night, every moment of the thrilling Wankhede Stadium resonated with the spirit of Indian cricket.”

Asian Cricket Council shared on Twitter, “#OnThisDayin2011, Team India ended a 28-year World Cup drought by defeating Sri Lanka in the final and becoming ICC World Cup champions for the second time!”
