Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association is preparing to give special gifts to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar on his birthday. Sachin will celebrate his 50th birthday on 24 April. To mark the occasion, MCA will install a life-size statue of Tendulkar inside the historic Wankhede Stadium. Tendulkar along with MCA officials had gone to Wankhede on Tuesday to locate two-three sites inside the stadium. Sachin was also present on this occasion.
It was at Wankhede that the legendary batsman played his last Test game for India in November 2013 against the West Indies. MCA president Amol Kale said he hoped the statue would be unveiled during the ODI World Cup in India later this year. The whole world knows about Sachin’s contribution to cricket. He is the pride of cricket and Bharat Ratna. Comparing Shane Warne, he said- As a special gift to MCA on his 50th birthday, we will put up a statue in the Wankhede Stadium premises, which will be similar to Shane Warne’s statue in MCG. We approached him a few weeks ago and he gave his consent. So now, we will soon decide where to place the statue. Also we will decide when to unveil it. We are planning to do it during the ODI World Cup, so that the greats of cricket will be present.
The Wankhede Stadium already has a stand named after Tendulkar. In 2021, the MCA decided to honor legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar with a special box and former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar with a stand. Tendulkar, like many international celebrities, has a wax statue at Madame Tussauds in London.
