Sachin’s fight against injuries and inspirational comeback

New Delhi | During his illustrious career spanning over two decades, Sachin Tendulkar saw several injuries and seemed doomed to end his career but each time he made spectacular comebacks, winning the hearts of his fans and silencing his critics.

There will never be an athlete in professional sports whose body has been in perfect shape and is functioning the way it used to.

Like top athletes, Sachin has been plagued by aches and pains over the years and his injuries have become a talking point in List Cricket circles.

But the Master Blaster has made inspirational comebacks after every injury. Keeping a record of Sachin’s injuries is a difficult task. It started in 1999. A back injury forced him to withdraw from the home tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in March–April that year. He then had to pull out of the tri-series against Pakistan and England in Sharjah.

In 2001, Sachin had to sit out of the tri-series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka due to a thumb injury. In 2002, he was ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe due to a thigh injury. He also missed the home game against the West Indies in the same year due to a hamstring injury.

The cricketer also suffered ankle and finger injuries during this period but they were not as serious as the tennis elbow injury he had suffered in 2004-05. In Sachin’s case the condition was so bad that he started having trouble even lifting the cricket bat.

Sachin said during an interview, “Tennis elbow was a very bad injury. I tried everything, took injections but nothing worked. All my physio friends and doctors tried but there were a few things I could do to get back on the field. was required.”

In August 2004, Sachin was diagnosed with this injury which kept him out of action for two months. He returned midway through the Test series against Australia in October and played until May 2005, before the injury resurfaced.

Sachin underwent surgery in London and after successful rehab made a tremendous comeback in October against Sri Lanka. However, there was a gap of five months between the surgery and his first cricket match which proved difficult for the Master Blaster.

He said, “I was not able to lift the cricket bat after the surgery. I was very desperate, I used to call my friends late in the night at 2 am, 4 am to come for a drive because I am not able to sleep. At home, Anjali used to tell me to focus on the good things that have happened in my life.”

Although Sachin had faced many injuries but tennis elbow made him think that his career was over. He then came back brilliantly and scored 93 against Sri Lanka to take India to 350/6. This innings gave him confidence.

Sachin said, “I thought my career was over. I prayed to God not to end my career like this. Let me get back on the field again. I remember after 4-5 months we played an ODI against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. Played the match. I can never forget that feeling. I looked up at the sky for this moment and thanked God. That’s what I wanted.”

After this difficult phase, Sachin suffered several other injuries, both in international cricket and the Indian Premier League, but each time he bounced back.
