Johannesburg. Sai Sudarshan entered international cricket on the basis of his performance in competitions like IPL 2023 and Emerging Men’s Asia Cup. This left-handed batsman made his ODI debut against South Africa on Sunday and remained unbeaten after scoring 55 runs.
In a video posted on BCCI.TV, Sai Sudarshan said, “It was amazing because as a young player, everyone wants to play for the country. Contributing to the team’s victory and winning trophies for the country is the most important thing for everyone. It’s someone’s dream. So, I was happy with my performance and it’s a very beautiful feeling.
“One culture I love is getting a debut cap which I love watching since my Tamil Nadu days. I was a bit emotional during the national anthem. It’s a great feeling and I enjoyed it.”
Chasing a modest target of 117, Sai Sudarshan made his mark in international cricket with a classy cover drive and opened his account with a four in his ODI debut.
Not only this, Sudarshan continued to impress with the way he used his footwork against the spinners. He scored 55 not out off 41 balls, while sharing an 88-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who scored 52 runs.
Sai Sudarshan was also helped by the experience of playing a four-day red-ball match for India ‘A’ against South Africa ‘A’ before joining the ODI team.
He said, “I just tried to gather as much information as possible about it. I had a sense of what the conditions would be like in South Africa. I had played an India ‘A’ match before coming here, so that helped me understand the conditions. “Helped me adjust.”
Sai Sudarshan comes from a Chennai-based family with connections to sports. His father R. Bhardwaj represented India in the 100 meter sprinting event at the 1993 SAFF Games in Dhaka.
His mother Usha Bhardwaj has been a volleyball player and is now her son’s strength and conditioning trainer. Usha is also known to have trained other players like Dinesh Karthik, Deepika Pallikal, Joshna Chinappa and Abhinav Mukund.
