Salute to the amazing 20 year journey of legendary player Sunil Chhetri in football – Dainik Savera Times

Guwahati: Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri was born to achieve achievements. Having played his first international match in 2005, he has so far played 149 international matches for the country, scoring 93 goals and earning 11 trophies. The name of Sunil Chhetri, a best captain and brilliant player, is included among the legends of the football world. He is on the verge of entering an exclusive club of players who have represented their country in 150 international matches. While talking to an English website, Sunil Chhetri remembered his golden journey.

Q: Tell us about your journey with the national team so far. Answer: When I started, I never thought that I would be able to play for the country one day. Actually, till a few days ago I did not even know that I was close to such a record. When you stop and think about it, you realize what an incredible accomplishment it is. I’m very fortunate, extremely grateful to be in this position. I think I am the only player to play 150 matches for India. I am really lucky to have got such an opportunity.

Q: When you were initially included in the Subroto Cup and Delhi League, did you ever think that you would be able to reach here?

Answer: When I was playing Subroto Cup in Delhi, I never dreamed that I would play for the country. It was not easy for a player playing for a club to reach the professional setup. There was no bridge that directly connected your actions to your destination. That’s no longer the case, because any kid playing at any club knows what he has to do to get where he wants to go. It was not like that in those days and hence, I never dreamed of playing for the country.
