Star men’s pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first Indian doubles pair to be ranked number one in the world rankings after winning the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Satwik and Chirag, who won India’s first badminton gold medal in the Asian Games in Hangzhou last Saturday, have reached the top of BWF’s lowest ranking by gaining two places.
The pair also joins the list of great players Prakash Padukone, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth who have achieved the world number one ranking. Defending Commonwealth Games champions and Asian Championship gold medalists Satwik and Chirag had defeated South Korean pair of Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho in straight games 21-18 21-16 in the final of the Asian Games on Sunday. Satwik and Chirag had won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Dubai in April.
The pair became the first Indian players to win a BWF Super 1000 tournament by winning the Indonesia Open title in June. In women’s singles, PV Sindhu has moved up two places to 13th position despite failing to win a medal in the Asian Games. Despite giving India a medal in men’s singles after 41 years in the form of a bronze medal at the Asian Games, HS Prannoy has lost one place to be at eighth place in the world rankings. Lakshya Sen, who won both his singles matches during the silver medal in the team event, is also at number 15 with a loss of one place. Kidambi Srikanth has gained one place at 20th position. The women’s doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Trisha Jolly has also moved up one place to 16th position.
