Experienced goalkeeper Savita Punia will be the captain of India’s 18-member women’s hockey team in the Olympic qualifiers to be held in Ranchi from January 13 to 19, while Vandana Kataria will be the vice-captain. The top three teams of the tournament will qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024.
Indian women’s team head coach Yaneke Shopman said in a release, “The FIH Olympic Qualifiers is an important tournament in our journey to the Paris Olympics. We have to live up to the expectations and qualify for the Olympics.” He said, ”After much deliberation, we have selected a balanced team. Savita and Vandana have played under immense pressure many times in their career. He can guide others as captain and vice-captain.
Savita recently won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award while Vandana became the first Indian woman player to play 300 international matches. India have been placed in Pool B along with New Zealand, Italy and the US while Germany, Japan, Chile and Czech Republic are in Group A. India will play its first match against America on 13 January. After this, they have to play New Zealand on 14 January and Italy on 16 January.
