Kolkata. Aditi Swami, gold medalist in the compound section of the women’s and men’s section of the Archery Championships, and Ojas Deotale’s coach, police constable Praveen Sawant of Satara, Maharashtra, are now hopeful that their archery training academy, built in an acre of sugarcane field, will now get due recognition . Both Aditi and Deotale trained under Sawant at Drishti Academy in Wadhe Phata area of Satara before becoming world champions. Sawant said in a conversation with ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “Aditi came to me at the age of 10 years.” She was not really impressive at that time but her persistence impressed me and I started training her. She was really hard working, didn’t take any break after any competition and used to train here for hours. I knew she was a rising champion.
Nagpur’s Devtale joins Sawant’s academy in 2022 to improve his game. Sawant said, “His archery was unorthodox but impressive. I just had to motivate him and prepare him mentally. He did the rest himself.” Sawant said that he started the academy by taking a loan on his wife’s and mother’s jewellery, which are still with the bank. “I am sure after their (Aditi and Deotale’s) success, people will now pay attention to the archery academy,” he said, expressing hope that their long-standing demand for government help would now be met and This academy will be given the status of a center.
