Chennai. The story of a father and daughter is quite interesting. When eight-year-old Tannu was watching Indian women’s wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympics at 4.30 in the morning with her father Jagdish Gulia. At that time Sakshi Malik turned the match in the last moments and won the bronze medal. It was that moment when both Jagdish and Tannu hugged each other in celebration, and this was the beginning of Tannu’s journey as a player.
Jagdish, a school bus driver in Haryana, decided that his daughter Tannu would become a wrestler.
Tannu, on the other hand, was even more excited thinking about the travel opportunities she would get as an athlete. Interestingly, she came one step closer to that dream by winning the bronze medal in the 65 kg weight category at the Rajarathinam Stadium here on Tuesday.
Tannu said, “My father would have been happy with the gold medal, but that’s okay. Unlike the last edition where I was eliminated in the second round and returned empty handed, this time I have something to show my father “
Usually, her father travels with her to most competitions, but this time her school did not approve his leave, so she was accompanied by her uncle Narendra and younger cousin Sakshi, who could not win a medal.
Tannu has so far won four medals including a bronze medal here. He won the gold medal in the Under-19 School Games in 2023. Won bronze medal in Under-17 Cadet Ranking Series in 2022 and bronze medal in Under-14 School National Games in 2019.
Tannu said, “In the next Khelo India Youth Games, you will see me taking the gold medal. I will leave no stone unturned and will work hard from here on. The opportunity and the medal I got in the Khelo India Youth Games have made me very excited. I know That I deserve bigger awards and can do better than this.”
He said that his father has done everything for him despite his low earnings. Also to keep me strong he feeds me everything. My uncle has also bought a buffalo so that there is no shortage of milk and ghee.”
