Senior Women’s Football National: Railways beat Manipur, Bengal, Haryana full points

Amritsar | Indian Railways defeated defending champions Manipur by a solitary goal, while West Bengal defeated Maharashtra and Haryana overcame Himachal Pradesh in crucial matches in the final round of the Women’s Senior National Football Championship on Tuesday. The focus was on the conflict between the Railways and the holders Manipur. Railways handed Manipur an emphatic 1-0 win at the Guru Nanak Stadium here.

Manisha Panna’s first-half strike was enough for the team to avenge their defeat in last year’s final of the tournament.

Railways defender Supriya Routroy was named player of the match for her solid performance at the back. This win means that both the teams in Group B are equal on points with two wins and one loss.

Meanwhile, West Bengal thrashed Maharashtra 5-0 in their Group B game at the GNDU Main Ground on Tuesday.

It started with captain Sangeeta Basfour’s 33rd-minute strike to give the two-time national champions the lead. Rimpa Haldar scored another goal to make it 2-0 before both sides headed for the break. Bengal maintained their lead and looked likely to finish the match with the full three points.

Ratna Haldar scored Bengal’s third goal in the 71st minute. Substitute Dular Marandi then scored twice in six minutes to make it 5-0. Basfor was adjudged player of the match.

On the other hand, Haryana kept their chances alive by winning their third consecutive win in the competition by defeating Himachal Pradesh 1-0 at the GNDU main ground. The joint leaders of Group B grabbed the three points in the 72nd minute through Arti’s lone strike.

Haryana remained in the driver’s seat for most of the game. The team recorded 35 attempts, of which 10 were on target. The team also enjoyed 69 per cent ball possession, proving their command over the game.

Aarti was given the player of the match award.
