Serious allegations against chess player Divya Deshmukh, questions raised on discrimination against women players

Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh has alleged that she faced inappropriate behavior from spectators at the recently concluded Tata Steel Masters tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. Divya said that the audience focused on irrelevant things like her hair, clothes and accent during the tournament.
The 18-year-old international chess master from Nagpur, who won the Asian Women’s Chess Championship last year, shared a long social media post. In which he has told that female players have to face misogyny regularly.
She wrote in the note that, I had been wanting to draw attention to this for some time, but was waiting for the tournament to end. I have noticed how women in chess are often taken for granted by spectators. The most recent example of this is the Tata Steel Masters Tournament. I played some matches that I thought were pretty good and I’m proud of them.

Divya wrote that, people told me how the spectators did not care about the game, rather they were focusing on everything else in the world apart from the game. Like my clothes, hair, accent and every other relevant thing. Divya finished 12th in the Challengers category at the Tata Steel Masters with a score of 4.5. She said that male players were getting the spotlight for their play, while women were judged for aspects that had nothing to do with their ability on the chess board.
