Shami created history, became the only Indian bowler to take five wickets twice in ODI World Cup

Dharamshala: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami on Sunday created history by becoming the only Indian bowler to take five-wicket hauls twice in the ICC ODI World Cup as India bowled out New Zealand for 273 runs in Dharamshala.

Shami, playing his first match in the 2023 edition of the ICC Men’s World Cup, finished his spell with impressive figures of 5-54 in 10 overs. On Sunday, Shami took the wickets of Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry.

The 33-year-old bowler made a perfect start on his return to World Cup cricket, bowling out Will Young with his very first ball.

Although New Zealand recovered thanks to a 159-run partnership, Shami gave India the much-needed breakthrough in the 34th over when he sent youngster Rachin Ravindra back to the pavilion as Shubman Gill took a simple catch.

He then took his third wicket in the 48th over by clean bowling Santner with a sharp yorker and followed it up with an inswinging full delivery to cross the bat-pad gap left by Matt Henry.

Shami completed his five wickets by dismissing centurion Daryl Mitchell on the fifth ball of the last over of the innings. Mitchell was out after scoring 130 runs off 127 balls and became the first Blackcaps batsman in 48 years to score a century against India in an ODI World Cup.
