Shane Watson appointed head coach of Quetta Gladiators

New Delhi . Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has been appointed the head coach of Quetta Gladiators for the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The franchise announced this on Wednesday.
The announcement saw the Gladiators’ first coach change since the inaugural tournament, as former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Moeen Khan, who served as coach for eight years, was promoted to the role of team director.
Team owner Nadeem Umar said in a statement shared on the team’s social media: “Shane has been an integral part of the success of Quetta Gladiators in the inaugural season of the country’s Premier League before his retirement and has been instrumental in coaching the team and helping them. There is no better choice than him to bring back the glory days for which we are famous. I wish him all the best in his new role and am confident in his abilities to take Quetta Gladiators to new heights.”
Watson has had an illustrious career as an all-rounder for Australia, winning the World Cup in 2007 and 2015 as part of the team. The 42-year-old retired from all cricket in 2020. He joined IPL franchise Delhi Capitals in 2022 as an assistant coach alongside his former Australia teammate Ricky Ponting.
Earlier this year, he was appointed the head coach of Major League Cricket franchise San Francisco Unicorns.
The Gladiators were the PSL’s most consistent franchise during its first four editions, when they reached the finals three times, and also won the title in 2019. However, in the last four seasons, they have missed the playoffs under Sarfaraz Ahmed. ,
Watson, who joined the franchise in 2018 after two years with Islamabad United, played a key role in the Gladiators’ success in PSL 2019, becoming their greatest overseas player during his three-season stint until 2020.
He was the leading run-scorer during their victorious campaign in 2019, scoring 430 runs at a strike rate of 143.81, a performance that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
