Shaun Marsh to retire from professional cricket after Renegades’ BBL match against Thunder

sydney (Uttam Hindu News): Veteran Australian batsman Shaun Marsh has announced that he will retire from professional cricket after Melbourne Renegades play their final match of the current Big Bash League (BBL) season against Sydney Thunder.

Marsh has followed his Renegades teammate and former Australia captain Aaron Finch in retiring from professional cricket. He retired from first-class cricket at the end of the last domestic season.

“I love playing for the Renegades, I have met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I have made will last a lifetime. This playing group is special. They have been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends.”

“Our members and fans are the most passionate and I am extremely grateful for their support throughout the journey. Stay tuned, there is a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt that they will lead this group.”

“Thank you to the Renegades coaches and staff and everyone behind the scenes – for supporting me from the beginning and through my final years,” Marsh said in a statement released by the BBL club. This has made my work a little easier in between.”

The 40-year-old made the move to the Renegades ahead of the ninth season of the BBL after 40 matches with the Perth Scorchers, which included back-to-back Championship titles. His ability to bat at any position in the top order made him an important asset for the Renegades.

Marsh, who represented Australia in all three formats from 2008 to 2019, is currently sixth in the all-time run-scorer list in the BBL. “SOS is one of those guys who is universally loved and admired by anyone who has played with or against him at domestic and international level. If I have any batsman in Australia who can help me plot and chase the target, it would be SOS.”

Renegades club head coach David Sekar said, “He has real strength and he has the experience to wait for the right shot at the right time which is important in T20 cricket. “A man of the match performance at the age of 40 is a testament to Shaun’s preparation and commitment.”
