Shooter Vijayveer Sidhu gives India 17th Paris Olympic quota

India’s Vijayveer Sidhu won the silver medal in the men’s 25m rapid fire event of the Asia Olympic Qualifiers held in Jakarta on Saturday, giving the country the 17th Paris Olympics quota. In this way, he joined senior partner Anish Bhanwala by getting Paris Olympic quota in 25 meter rapid fire.
Anish had secured the Olympic quota for this event by winning a bronze medal in the Asian Championship in Changwan, Korea last year. 21-year-old Vijayveer, a team bronze medalist at last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games, did not have to wait for a medal to clinch the quota. He had secured the quota by qualifying for the finals from fourth position with a score of 577. Four of the six shooters who reached the final on Saturday were certain to get quota places.
Chandigarh’s Vijayveer proudly won the quota by shooting a target of 28 in the elimination round and won the silver medal. He finished behind Nikita Chiryukin of Kazakhstan who won the gold medal with a shot of 32. Rapid fire pistol is a strong event for India in which Vijay Kumar won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Anish looked like a strong contender to clinch a quota for the Tokyo Olympics but missed out on doing so at the 2021 ISSF World Cup in New Delhi.
If both Vijayveer and Anish get a chance to represent the country in the Paris Olympics, it will be the first time in rapid fire shooting. India has so far secured four Paris Olympics quotas in Jakarta. Apart from Vijayveer, Isha Singh won Paris quota in women’s 10 meter air pistol event, Varun Tomar won men’s 10 meter air pistol event and Rhythm Sangwan won Paris quota in women’s 25 meter pistol event.
