New Delhi. Two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced that India batsman Shreyas Iyer will return as the team captain for the 2024 season of the tournament. Also Nitish Rana will work as his deputy.
Shreyas said in a statement issued by the franchise, “I believe that last season presented many challenges to us, including my absence due to injury. Nitish has done a great job not only for me but also with his commendable leadership. “I am glad that KKR have made him vice-captain. There is no doubt that it will strengthen the leadership group.”
Rana was appointed captain of KKR for IPL 2023 after Iyer was ruled out of the competition due to a back injury, which he suffered during the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Ahmedabad and required surgical intervention in the United Kingdom .
Iyer made a comeback in the Asia Cup. However, he did not play after the group stage due to back spasms. But he performed brilliantly in the World Cup and scored 530 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66.25, which included two centuries and three fifties.
Iyer was recently a member of India’s 4-1 T20 series win against Australia on home soil and is currently in South Africa for the all-format tour. Under Rana’s leadership, KKR finished seventh in the points table after winning six matches, while losing eight matches and finished with 12 points.
Iyer and Rana were among the 12 players retained by KKR ahead of the IPL 2024 player auction to be held in Dubai on December 19.
With a purse of Rs 32.7 crore in the auction, KKR will aim to fill its 12 slots, four of which are overseas.
