Sift Kaur Samra wins gold medal in National Shooting Championship 2023

Asian Games gold medalist Sift Kaur Samra won her second consecutive title in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event by defeating senior Punjab teammate Anjum Moudgil at the National Shooting Championship here on Wednesday. India’s current number one female skeet shooter Ganemat Sekhon and number one male skeet shooter Anantjit Singh Naruka won their first individual senior national titles at the Karni Singh Range.
Sift secured first place in the final by scoring 465.7 points while Anjum (463.8 points) stood second. Ashi Choksi of Madhya Pradesh stood third with 452 marks. Anjum had the lead in the first 15 ‘kneeling’ position shots but Sift took the lead in 15 ‘prone’ shots and never looked back. Sift and Anjum also gave Punjab the gold medal in the team event. Earlier, Haryana shooter Nischal created a new qualification national record with 595 points.
With this effort she remained on top ahead of Sift (593 points). Aashi stood third with 590 points. Anjum secured the eighth and final qualifying position with a score of 587. In skeet, Ganemat of Punjab and Anantjeet of Rajasthan won in opposite styles. Ganemat had scored 116 points in qualification and had to go through a shootoff of five shooters for the last four qualifying spots. After this he shot 56 targets in the final of 60 shots.
Zahara Disawala, who topped the qualifiers, came second with 55 hits and Sanjana Sood came third with 44 hits. In the men’s skeet event, Ananthjeet dominated from the beginning and won. He also topped the qualifiers in which he scored 123 points out of 125. Then in the final of six male shooters he hit 58 out of 60. Munek Batula stood second with 55 points and Bhavteg Gill stood third with 45 points.
Earlier in the year, Ganemat had won two medals, including a gold and a silver, at the ISSF World Cup, while Ananthjit had won a silver medal in the men’s skeet event at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
