Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Asia Cup 2023: In the Asia Cup 2023, on Thursday (August 31), the teams of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be face to face. This match will be played at Pallekele International Stadium. When the teams of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh face each other, their eyes will be on recovering from the injuries of their key players and starting the campaign with a win. Sri Lanka had won the Asia Cup in 2022 (in T20 format) but till Tuesday it could not even announce its team for this stage as some of its players are injured while two Kovid-19 have been found infected.
Sri Lankan team going through poor form in ODIs
Sri Lankan players Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmanta Chameera, Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madhushanka are battling injuries while Kusal Perera is yet to recover from the Kovid-19 infection. Even before these shocks, the Sri Lankan team was going through a bad form in ODIs this year. They lost 0-3 at the hands of India at the beginning of the year and then New Zealand also defeated them 2-0. The team then managed to beat Afghanistan at home before scoring a lot of runs in the ICC Qualifier in Harare but still failed to improve their game against top rivals which should be a concern for them.
Dasun Shanaka’s performance will be under watch
To challenge Bangladesh, they will have to hope that Pathum Nissanka (687 runs in 2023), Dimuth Karunaratne (481 runs) and Charith Asalanka (341 runs) perform well, who have been their best batsmen so far this year. Also, the team will hope that captain Dasun Shanaka regains his form against Bangladesh, who has not batted aggressively in the entire year except for scoring a century against India. Talking about bowling, spinner Mahish Tikshna (23 wickets in 10 matches in 2023) and fast bowler Kasun Rajita (14 wickets) will have to make up for the lack of their main bowlers. The Sri Lankan team can take relief from the fact that the Bangladesh team is also struggling in the same situation.
Bangladesh team struggling with injury
The Bangladesh team will miss injured Tamim Iqbal, fast bowler Ibadat Hossain and wicket-keeper batsman Liton Das. Das is yet to recover from viral fever which ruled him out of the entire Asia Cup on Wednesday. Wicket-keeper batsman Anamul Haque Bijoy was included in place of Das. Bangladesh’s team is usually strong at home but they lost the ODI series against England and Afghanistan this year. A win over Ireland ahead of the Asia Cup will not be enough to ease their worries. Although they have individual performance players in both batting and bowling.
Captain Shakibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Shanto have scored more than 400 runs this year while young Tauhid Hriday has also scored more than 300 runs. But most of these runs were scored against Ireland. Experienced Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed have done well in bowling this year but they have not been able to do much against strong opponents like England or India. It will be very important for both the teams to win the match on Thursday as they have to face Afghanistan in the next match of Group B. Both the teams will make every effort to win because ‘net run rate’ can be important considering the possibility of rain.
