Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday refused to comment on the controversy over wrestler Bajrang Punia returning his Padma Shri in protest against the election of Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, to the post of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president.
Olympic medalist Bajrang had reached New Delhi’s duty path (outside the Prime Minister’s residence) on Friday to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hand over the protest letter. However, the policemen stopped them there. After this, Bajrang placed his Padmashree medal on this letter on the footpath.
“I have already spoken a lot,” Thakur said on the sidelines of the felicitation ceremony for top players and Asian Games medal winners at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center here. No further comments.” Thakur also inaugurated new hostel facilities and a synthetic athletic track at SAI on the occasion. He encouraged past champions to help emerging athletes make their mark in international level competitions.
“Our players won more than 100 medals in both the Asian Games (in Hangzhou) and the Asian Para Games,” he said. Their stories need to reach people.” He said, ”I had asked them before they left (for the Asian Games) whether they would be able to cross the 100 medal mark and they were collectively confident of it. On this occasion, the Sports Minister appealed to the former champions to contribute to maintaining success in future competitions.
“We have won many big competitions,” he said. We won the first Thomas Cup last year. We also saw a lot of success in hockey, athletics and other events. Now, the champion players must ensure that they impart their understanding and experience to the upcoming youngsters so that we can do better in the future.
