Sports Ministry approves training of teenagers Jena and Mirabai Chanu for Paris Olympics

The Sports Ministry on Thursday approved the proposal of Asian Games silver medalist javelin thrower Kishore Kumar Jena to train in Australia and Tokyo Olympics medalist Mirabai Chanu’s month-long ‘rehab’ training in America. Jena will train for 78 days in Gold Coast, Australia while Chanu will go to America for training in St. Louis. She will have regular sessions with Dr. Aaron Horschig and will also be accompanied by head coach Vijay Sharma.
“The Sports Ministry will bear the airfare, accommodation and food expenses of Jena, her coach and physio under the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) scheme,” the ministry said in a release. Apart from this, the expenses of their training, massage facilities, medical and local travel expenses along with medical insurance will also be borne. It said, “The ministry will bear the airfare, boarding and lodging expenses, gym expenses, medical insurance and other expenses of Mirabai and her coach under TOPS.” ,
The Sports Ministry approved the foreign training of wrestlers Deepak Punia (Freestyle), Ashu (Greco Roman) and Ronit Sharma (Greco Roman). According to the release, “Tops will provide financial assistance to Olympian Deepak Punia for his 31-day training in Michigan, USA. He will be accompanied by his physio Shubham Gupta while the Indian Greco-Roman wrestler will go to Almaty, Kazakhstan and train for 14 days with the Kazakhstan wrestling team. These two will also be accompanied by coaches, masseurs and ‘sparring’ partners.
