Kolkata. The West Bengal government has decided to upgrade the security of Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian cricket team and ex-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), to ‘Z’ category. A senior officer gave this information.
Ganguly was earlier provided with ‘Y’ category security and after its expiry, it was decided on Tuesday to enhance his security. “The security provided to Ganguly had expired, so a review was done as per protocol and it was decided to upgrade it to ‘Z’ category,” the official said. According to reports, now 8 to 10 policemen will be under the protection of the former cricketer.
Under ‘Y’ category security, Ganguly’s security cordon consisted of three policemen from the special branch and an equal number of security personnel guarding his residence in Behala. Representatives of the state secretariat reached Ganguly’s Behala office on Tuesday, where they met at the Kolkata Police Headquarters. Had a meeting with the officials of Lalbazar and local police station.
“Ganguly is currently traveling with his IPL cricket team Delhi Daredevils and will return to Kolkata on May 21,” the official said. From that day onwards, they will start getting ‘Z’ category security.” In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor C.V. Anand Bose and Trinamool Congress MP and National Secretary Abhishek Banerjee will get ‘Z+’ category security. While state government ministers like Farhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak are provided with ‘Z’ category security.
Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar also has ‘Z plus’ category security with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
