Shyamal Vallabhjee has joined the national camp of players preparing for the Intercontinental Cup to be held here next month. Shyamal has previously worked with the ATP Tour, IPL franchises and many professional golfers around the world.
For the first time, a sports psychologist has been associated with the Indian men’s football team as part of an exercise to focus on the mental health of players, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Monday. Shyamal Vallabhjee has joined the national camp of players preparing for the Intercontinental Cup to be held here next month. Shyamal has previously worked with the ATP Tour, IPL franchises and many professional golfers around the world.
The Indian team will then take part in the SAFF Championship in Bengaluru while it has a few more international tournaments to play till the Asian Cup in Doha in January 2024. “A renewed focus on mental health is one of the federation’s objectives, which not only aims to maximize potential and performance, but also create an environment of trust and togetherness among players,” the AIFF said in a release. “The involvement of a sports psychologist will address the issue of fatigue of players and ensure that they have systems in place to recover,” he said.
Head coach Igor Stimac is hopeful that Shyamal joining the support staff will help the team create a strong team culture and a sense of belonging within the dressing room in the long run. Apart from this, they will be helped in developing strategies related to confidence, concentration and handling pressure as an individual player and as a team. Stimac said, “We will start with understanding how each player’s personality reacts to pressure and then move towards creating a coaching system that will help them become emotionally resilient to outside pressure ”
Expressing his excitement over his appointment with the national team, Shyamal said that initial interactions with the players and coaching staff have yielded positive results. “The players are regularly monitored psychologically, every aspect of their physical well-being is examined and worked upon. It is important for them to do this psychologically. I am proud to be a part of the new Indian football project and look forward to helping them achieve success.
