New Delhi. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu believes that her team is brimming with confidence and feels that they can go a long way in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 to be held in South Africa from February 10 to 26. Never before have we been so confident in this tournament. Our ambitions are no less than winning the tournament. This is our ultimate goal. Our confidence stems from recent results, the skills and competencies of our players and the experience.
We competed well in the Asia Cup and made it to the final against India. We beat several teams including Bangladesh in the preliminary round and then Pakistan in the semi-finals to reach the final.
“Our preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has been good. We have played a lot of international matches in recent months, including the Asia Cup. We have found a kind of rhythm and I feel that we are in good shape,” Chamari said at the ICC’s Kollam on Saturday. That we are also looking for the right combination.”
Chamari also revealed that Sri Lanka, making their eighth appearance in the Women’s T20 World Cup, had made some special preparations at home keeping in mind the conditions in South Africa, despite going into the tournament without a head coach.
We are focused on this tournament and working in every way for it. We have some special training sessions keeping in mind the conditions in South Africa. We have worked on individual skill building, power hitting and enhancing our fielding abilities.
Left-handed opener Chamari believes that the T20 format is a big boon for women’s cricket and helps in popularizing the game. The T20 format is the most exciting element in women’s cricket and is playing a huge role in promoting the women’s game.
Sri Lanka will play their first match of the tournament against South Africa in Cape Town on 10 February and Chamari signed hoping to do well in the African nation. In South Africa, we look forward to momentum and buoyancy, but we are really looking forward to challenges.
We are adequately prepared and don’t see any reason why we will not perform well, he added. South Africa is an incredible place to watch and play cricket.(IANS)
