New Delhi: Steve Smith will captain Australia in the upcoming three-match ODI series against India while Pat Cummins has decided to stay at home due to the death of his mother.
Cummins had left the India tour and left for home after the second Test in Delhi to be with his mother Maria. Cummins’ mother died of breast cancer last week while the last Test was being played in Ahmedabad. Smith led Australia in the last two Tests in Cummins’ absence.
Head coach Andrew McDonald was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au: “Pat is not coming back. He is looking after things that have happened at home. Our thoughts are with Pat and his family who are going through a difficult time.” “
Cummins has no place in the 15-man squad but Nathan Ellis was recently recalled after Jhye Richardson was ruled out of the tour of India with a hamstring injury.
Macdonald also confirmed that David Warner would return to the team after missing the last two Tests with an elbow injury. Ashton Agar will also return to the team after being sent back home during the Test series.
The ODI series will also see the return of all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who suffered a leg injury last November.
The first match of the ODI series will be played on March 17 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
