Sumit Nagal to lead Indian men’s singles challenge at Chennai Open

Sumit Nagal, who recently became the first Indian to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam tournament, will lead the Indian challenge in the men’s singles at the Chennai Open ATP Challenger 100 tournament starting on Sunday. Nagal (26 years) had entered the second round of the Australian Open last month by defeating 31st seeded and 27th ranked Alexander Bulblik of Kazakhstan in the world ranking.

Currently his world ranking is 121. Ramkumar Ramanathan and Mukund Sasikumar will be the other Indian players in the men’s singles who have been given wildcards into the main draw. Italy’s Luca Nardi will be the top seed. Players from 14 countries are participating in the tournament but last year’s winner Max Purcell of Australia is not participating this time because he is playing in other ATP tournaments.

India’s Arjun Kadhe and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan are the top seeds in the doubles category. This is the first of four Challenger Series tournaments to be played in the country while the others will be played in Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi. There will be 32 players in the singles main draw and 16 pairs in the doubles on hard courts with a total prize money of $1,33,250.
