Top Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal on Tuesday said his focus is on staying fit and breaking into the top 100 in the world rankings ahead of this year’s Paris Olympics. Actually, this 26-year-old player from Haryana has faced injuries many times in the past. He could not play in the US Open qualifying in 2018 due to injury. He then suffered a hip injury in 2021 and had to undergo surgery in November of that year.
Let us tell you that, during a conversation at the Chennai Open ATP Challenger tournament, Nagal said in response to a question from PTI that staying fit will be my biggest priority. The second (goal) would be to play in the Olympics which would be a good feeling. But for this you will have to be in the top 100. Nagal has reached the pre-quarterfinals.
Nagal, currently ranked 121st in the ATP singles rankings, is confident of breaking into the top 100. Nagal said, “This (Olympic qualification) will be possible only if I keep winning matches. I have to focus on the upcoming matches and not think about what is going to happen in the next five months because tennis is a very unpredictable sport where anything can happen. I prefer to have small and precise goals rather than the big picture.”
Last month, he made headlines after making it to the main draw of the Australian Open when he won his opening match and became the first Indian to defeat a seeded player in the main draw. However, he lost in the second round. Talking about the experience in Melbourne, Nagal admitted that it has given him a lot of confidence. “I gained a lot of confidence tennis-wise, both physically and mentally,” he said. But at the same time, I just wanted to play solid tennis and try to do the things I wanted to work on.”
Nagal further said that, overall it was a great experience to play in this (Australian Open) and win the match so I will not complain about it. I feel the momentum is with me and I am playing well.
