Sunil Chhetri will play his 150th international match against Afghanistan, AIFF will honor him

New Delhi: Almost two decades after making his senior debut against Pakistan, India’s charismatic footballer Sunil Chhetri is ready to achieve another feat. He will play his 150th international match in the World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan in Guwahati on Tuesday.
With this achievement, Chhetri will become the 40th player in the world in the list of footballers to play 150 or more international matches, which is headed by Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (205).
India played a goalless draw in the first leg match against Afghanistan. The team finished second in Group A in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Chhetri first wore the senior national team jersey on 12 June 2005 during a friendly match against Pakistan. He scored a goal for India in this 1-1 draw match. Since then Chhetri has played 149 matches for the national team and scored a record 93 goals.
Chhetri also has a unique record in his name. This 39-year-old player has scored at least one goal in his first, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th and 125th match for India.
All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Choubey said in the release, “His journey, which started in 2005, has been a wonderful one which we all are fortunate to have witnessed. He said, “Chhetri playing his 150th international match is an extraordinary achievement which will go a long way in keeping the Indian football flag flying high.” Choubey said, “He has inspired millions of people to play this beautiful game.” I congratulate Chhetri for reaching this height in international football. AIFF also announced that they will honor the Indian star on the occasion of the second leg match against Afghanistan in Guwahati.
